Telephones
The
international code for Hungary is 36, followed by 1 for the area
code for Budapest and by the local number.
Public telephones
accept either coins (10, 20, 50 and 100 HUF coins) as well as pre-paid
phone cards which are available from tobacconists, newsagents, post
offices, travel agency offices, Tesco department stores, newspaper
kiosks, railway stations and Matáv Pont shops (with values
of 800 HUF and 1800 HUF). Cheap rate runs at night and on public
holidays.
You can be phoned
back in telephone boxes with a black and white arrow and red target
on the door which display the word visszahivhato and
a telephone number.

To make an international call from Hungary dial the international
access code 00, wait for the tone, and then dial the country and
city/area code followed by the subscriber's number. Unless you have
a global calling card, we suggest you to avoid making international
calls from your hotel as a five-minute call will cost 3000 HUF (almost
the cost of a decent meal out).

Local Calls
Budapest telephone numbers comprise seven digits, all other areas
have six digits (excluding the area code in both cases). To call
from a landline phone to a mobile phone dial:
06 30 (T-Mobile, formerly Westel),
06 20 (Pannon GSM),
06 70 (Vodafone) and the 7-digit subscriber's number.
