Taxi
Taxis have the
word Taxi written on them and have yellow registration
number plates. Ordering a taxi by phone is cheaper than hailing
one in the street. Switchboard operators usually speak English.
Few cab drivers speak fluent English. The taxi normally arrives
within 5-15 minutes. You also can call a taxi from any card-operated
phone in Budapest by pressing the "A" button.
It is compulsory
for them to use a taximeter that can also give a receipt. The price
chargeable is calculated according to the distance travelled but
will also include a fixed booking fee and (if appropriate) a waiting
fee. If ordered by phone you'll usually find both the per/km rate
and waiting rate.
It is customary
to give a tip of 10%. Rates depend on the taxi companies and the
price of petrol. Fees are normally 40% higher after 10:00 pm.
